Pastor and Elder
As Elder, Gerry is jointly responsible with Jon and John for leading Church by the Bay according to God's Word the Bible. As Pastor, he is the main Bible teacher. His full-time job is to teach, pray and train others.
Gerry is married to Catherine and they have a son, Jack, and three daughters, May, Izzy and Phoebe. The Straker family have lived in the West End since July 2008 and love living in Morecambe.
Gerry trained at Oak Hill Theological College and was Assistant Pastor at Moorlands Church, Lancaster for 3 years. Before training for the ministry, Gerry worked for St John’s Lindow in Cheshire and in university administration.
Gerry used to play a lot of sport, and still attempts running, cycling and football.
Jon is jointly responsible with John and Gerry for leading Church by the Bay according to God's Word the Bible.
Jon is married to Hannah, and they have three children. Jon became a Christian after moving to the North West in 2003. Jon and Hannah spent a number of years in Lancaster as members of Moorlands Church, where he spent two years in ministry training. They have lived in Morecambe for nine years, and they love this town! Jon and Hannah are passionate about growing the church through God's spoken word. In his spare time, Jon is a primary school teacher, which he thinks may just be the best job in the world. He enjoys cooking, making music, and being outside - ideally all at the same time.
As Families Worker, Caz is our second full time worker. Under our elders, she trains the children's team, teaches our children and helps with our women's work.
Caz is married to Ben. She grew up in Coleraine, Northern Ireland but quickly found she loved the North West of England when she spent 4 years in Carlisle as a student and then as a Ministry Trainee at Carlisle Baptist Church. Caz trained at Oak Hill Theological College before moving back North to Morecambe in 2017 to join Church by the Bay as our Families Worker. She is excited about sharing life with and seeing whole families grow in their love for Jesus. In her spare time you will find Caz enjoying music (tapping along to the drum rhythm), frequenting anywhere that sells good food and adventuring into the Lakes.
John is jointly responsible with Jon and Gerry for leading Church by the Bay according to God's Word the Bible.
John is married to Pam and they have a son Jonah. John teaches secondary school Maths. He is from Devon and spent a lot of his childhood outdoors, hiking and exploring. John became a Christian as a teenager at a youth and families camp and since then His love for God's Word, hearing it and teaching it has continued to grow. His all time favourite movie is The Last of the Mohicans but he likes The Proposal too!
Right from day one training has been at the heart of what we’re about and our Ministry Training Scheme is an important part of this. Over one or two years Trainees receive theological and practical training in handling and teaching God's word as well as mentoring by older Christians.
Steve grew up on the outskirts of Stoke, before moving north study Physics and Maths at Lancaster University. There he started attending Moorlands Church, and really understood the good news of Jesus sometime in his first year. He then became a Ministry Trainee for a year there before deciding to make the switch to Morecambe. He's excited to learn even more from God's word over this side of the river. Steve enjoys hill-walking and getting over excited about quite mundane things.
A good number of people work very hard for our Church family. Several give hours in the day that could be work time to do voluntary work to serve our Church: this is our Office Team. Jonathan is our Treasurer and is in the office on Thursdays.
Jonathan grew up in the area, and studied Astonomy and Maths at Sheffield University. After most of his life at Moorlands Church, Jonathan joined the launch team of Church by the Bay. Jonathan enjoys watching films and is a classic Dr Who fan.
As part of our Office Team, Laura gives three mornings a week to help the smooth running of Church life.
Laura is married to Matt and they have been part of Church by the Bay since the beginning. They both studied at Lancaster University, and attended Moorlands Church in Lancaster for several years.. Laura also does some freelance medical and creative work when she is not working in the church office. She loves singing and musical theatre, and together with Matt, often takes part in local theatre productions.
