Ministry Trainee Scheme

As a church, right from day one training has been at the heart of what we’re about and our Ministry Training Scheme is a central part of this.

At Church by the Bay, Ministry Trainees receive theological and practical training in handling and teaching God's word; hands-on experience and training in pastoral ministry; mentoring by older Christians and full-time exposure to the inner workings of church life. Our Trainees are also taught formally at the North West Partnership training course.

Here’s what two of our former trainees have to say…

Kerry

As a Ministry Trainee, I received an excellent experience of what it's like to be a full-time church worker. At Church by the Bay you are alongside the pastor and his family "in the trenches" of gospel work. This is what makes Church by the Bay such a great place for this training - you get an up close and personal view of pastoral ministry in action: the relationships, the joys and the struggles. This is a church family with a culture of healthy feedback, always training and sharpening one another so that our service becomes more biblical, more relational, and more effective. There is a high level of personal challenge, matched by a high level of support. I also got to learn solid doctrine and Bible handling skills on the North West Partnership Ministry Training Course, I then got to put them into practice in all sorts of ways, including pioneering new initiatives.

It's a full-on, out-of-your-comfort-zone year doing the most valuable work imaginable: growing Jesus' kingdom!

Kerry recently married Gregg and is now serving with him at Carlisle Baptist Church. She helps with Music and admin, and teaches children, young people and women. She is continuing her studies with a two year course in Biblical Counselling.

Steve

I came to Church by the Bay in 2018 to do a second year of being a trainee after doing my first year with a partner church. It has been the most wonderful year of my life (so far). Gerry (the Pastor) and Caz (the Families worker) have both given me thorough feedback for all the teaching I’ve done, and I have learned so much from them about teaching the Bible, whether it be to children, young people or adults.

I have seen much more clearly the joys of church life, but also the realistic nature of everyday frustrations. It's been great having such a close relationship with Gerry and through that I have seen more clearly how a church is run. I also think that I have grown a lot in my understanding of how people are different and how God uses these differences for his glory to grow his kingdom, which is something I didn't get as much before.

I now feel far more equipped to enter full-time ministry at some point in the future and I'm even more excited at the possiblity of doing so.

Steve continues to serve Church by the Bay in many ways and we hope to send him to Bible College in the future.
